Waiting for You Author: Megan Derr Title: Waiting for You Series: Lifesworn 1 Genre: High Fantasy Pairing: Poly, M/M/F Rating: Four Petals On the Author's Website: http://maderr.com/?page_id=31 Summary: Shanna has spent her whole life waiting—waiting to be old enough, waiting for the day she must pick a consort, waiting for a chance to finally overcome her despicable stepfather… and waiting for someone to finally banish the loneliness that comes with being a queen-in-waiting one step away from being murdered. On the eve of the two-week event during which she must pick a consort from a bevy of suitors, two strangers arrive claiming to have been invited—though she knows full well they did not receive any such invitation. But the handsome, mischievous Prince Kallaar is too intriguing to resist, and his quiet bodyguard too compelling to ignore… But she’s learned the hard way never to let anyone get too close, and on the verge of gaining true independence her stepfather will stop at nothing to see she never gets it. Maggie's Review:
I received this book as an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review. Shanna knows the trouble she's in: her stepfather is scheming to take over her kingdom and there's very little she can do alone to stop him. Then Kallaar and Ahmla appear and Shanna realizes the dangers of her stepfather are easier to handle with friends. Except, she really wishes they might be more than friends and that distraction might just cost them all their lives. I want to start this review off by saying that I did really enjoy reading this story and that it definitely deserved four petals, but this story was so different to Derr's usual writing style that if she hadn't sent me the book I might not have known Derr was the author. The book read like a YA novel (aside from the graphic sex throughout the entire latter half of the book) with a very young woman just coming of age. She was naive and childlike, yet enough on the cusp of adulthood to understand that she could do more. The problem with that is the fact that Shanna is in her twenties and well past the age where that sort of naivety is believable, especially considering her difficult childhood. I'm used to Derr nailing her characters ages to their personalities, so it was odd to read a main character that needed a bit more editing. The plot itself was very straightforward without the typical twists and turns Derr is known for. This story felt like it could have handled the same amount of depth as some of Derr's other stories, so it did feel a bit lacking. The best comparison I can think of is how Derr's The Engineered Throne said right in the summary that tragedy would strike, and I was still completely shocked when it happened. Waiting for You had a similar vibe to The Engineered Throne, but didn't have nearly the same depth and plot-building. I absolutely enjoyed what there was to read in Waiting for You, but there wasn't anything that surprised me. Maggie's Recommendation: My review might sound like I didn't like the book, what with my comparing the story to a YA novel and mentioning that the story lacked twists and real plot depth, but I really did enjoy reading this story and I absolutely recommend it.
